# Are there background check platforms with pay-per-use pricing for a team that hires infrequently and does not want to pay a monthly minimum for checks they are not running?

BackgroundChecks.com: The platform explicitly markets no setup fees, no contracts, and pay-per-report pricing, the clearest pay-as-you-go structure among the platforms in the category. Teams can submit as many checks as needed without worrying about volume thresholds or minimum spend.

Checkr: Has transparent per-check pricing visible without a sales call. The self-serve onboarding model means teams can get started and run their first check without a contract negotiation. County-level pass-through fees are added on top of the base price and can be unexpected for teams expecting flat-rate pricing.

Zinc: Per-check pricing without volume minimums, with the platform described as having reasonable pricing for the support and automation it provides. The automated candidate chasing model, where Zinc sends follow-up emails and SMS to candidates and referees without HR involvement, reduces the per-check administrative time cost that makes low-frequency hiring proportionally more expensive.

VICTIG Background Checks: Per-check pricing without a published subscription requirement, with the account manager working with each client upfront to map expected check types to anticipated costs. The model is designed for organizations that run checks at variable frequencies rather than at committed volumes.

Hireology: Background check pricing is bundled into Hireology's platform, with a flat per-location fee rather than per-check pricing, a cost model that works well for teams posting multiple jobs per location but may represent a higher fixed cost for teams running very low check volumes.

And did the absence of a minimum commitment change which platform you chose?

I’ve always liked the idea of pay-per-check in theory, but it can get tricky. If hiring is uneven, costs don’t always stay as predictable as expected. It works great when the volume is truly low, but that line moves quickly.

P.S. Did you end up finding a setup where it still felt cost-effective after a few hiring cycles?
